Why Critiquing Sparks Creativity (with a little help from Generative AI)

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned about collaboration is this: it is easier to ask for constructive feedback than to ask for brand-new ideas.
Whether I’m working with a team or brainstorming solo, I’ve found that starting with something like a rough draft, a simple outline, or even a placeholder slide makes all the difference. It gives people (myself included) something tangible to respond to, critique, and build upon.
Lately, I’ve started applying this principle with generative AI. GenAI platforms have become my go-to partners for brainstorming. They help me quickly generate a first draft of a document, a presentation idea, or even a creative tagline. And here’s the magic: that AI-generated content doesn’t have to be perfect - it just needs to exist.
Once I have something on the page, the critique process begins. I refine, tweak, and reshape it until it truly reflects my vision. And more often than not, the act of critiquing what AI provides sparks ideas I wouldn’t have thought of otherwise.
Generative AI isn’t replacing creativity - it is enhancing creativity. It’s like having a collaborator who always takes that daunting first step, so you can focus on refining and innovating.
Next time you’re staring at a blank page, consider asking AI to help you get started. You might be surprised at how quickly the ideas start flowing.
